Card counting is probably one of the best-known strategies in blackjack. In the past, players have achieved great success by using this technique in casinos. If you want to play in an online casino, can you use this technique there too? That depends mainly on the type of blackjack game you’re playing. Read on to find out how card counting works in online blackjack.
How does card counting work?
When counting cards, you try to keep track of which cards have already been played and which are still in the deck. High cards such as tens, face cards and aces are generally to your advantage, whilst low cards tend to work in the casino’s favour.
By keeping a count during the game, you try to estimate when there are relatively many high cards left in the deck. At such times, you can, for example, increase or decrease your stake. Contrary to what many people think, you don’t need to remember every single card to count cards. You can categorise the cards by points: 2 to 6, 7 to 9, and 10s, Aces and face cards.
Why online RNG blackjack works differently
In most online blackjack games – those that aren’t played live – the cards are automatically reshuffled after every round. This is done via a so-called Random Number Generator, often abbreviated as RNG.
Because the deck is constantly reset, there is little point in keeping track of cards across multiple hands. Each round has a completely new set of cards. As a result, it is virtually impossible to count cards in standard online blackjack.
Card counting in live blackjack
In live blackjack, your chances are slightly better. Here, you play via a live stream against a real dealer at a physical blackjack table. Because the dealer uses a real deck, you can in principle keep track of which cards have already been played, just like in a real casino.
However, most live casinos nowadays use multiple decks, and the cards are often shuffled before a significant portion has been played. You can usually find the number of decks used in the game rules. Many blackjack games nowadays use six to eight decks. Even in physical casinos, single-deck games are rare these days.
If you want to apply this famous technique, you’ll have the best chance if you find live games that use one or two decks of cards. Whatever your approach, blackjack is and remains a fantastic game with the ideal combination of probability and chance.
Playing online blackjack
Anyone wishing to try online blackjack can choose between classic RNG games and live blackjack with real dealers. Both variants largely follow the same basic rules, but the gaming experience differs significantly.
Beginners are best advised to practise first in a free demo version. This allows you to learn at your own pace when to stand, hit, double down or split, without immediately playing with real money.
