What are blackjack bets?

Of all the table games offered at any online casino, blackjack is probably the most popular. For many reasons, blackjack is even more popular than poker. This card game is fast-paced, and the house edge is relatively low, giving you a greater chance of winning.

The game’s accessibility and straightforward rules also contribute to its popularity. There are no complex rules to memorise, so you feel less overwhelmed when you start playing and quickly get the hang of it.

Looking for a clear explanation of the basic rules of blackjack, or just want a refresher? You’re in the right place, as we’ll explain the most common bets in blackjack clearly and concisely. After reading this article, you’ll know what to do when you’re sitting across from the dealer!

Basic Blackjack Bets

The game always begins with a bet, after which the dealer deals two cards to themselves and the players. After receiving two cards, the dealer reveals one, and it’s up to you to decide what to do next. You can either keep your hand (stand) or take an additional card (hit).

Your goal is to beat the dealer’s hand by reaching a card value of 21 (or as close as possible). If you exceed 21 points, you lose the game. The same goes for the dealer. If you win a hand, you receive a 1-to-1 payout, meaning you double your bet. If you get a blackjack, i.e., exactly 21 points, you receive a 3-to-2 payout.

You can also choose to double your bet after receiving your cards. In this case, you request an additional card in exchange for doubling your bet. If your first two cards have the same value, you can split them into two separate hands. You then receive an additional card for each hand and must place a new bet equal to your initial hand.

Additional Blackjack Bets

Aside from the basic bets we just mentioned, there are several additional bets you can place. A well-known side bet is “insurance”. When the dealer shows an ace, you can decide to cover yourself in case the dealer has a blackjack. You pay about half of your bet as insurance, and if the dealer indeed has a blackjack, you receive a 2-to-1 payout for this insurance.

A similar bet is the “Even Money” bet. You can place this bet when you have a blackjack, and the dealer shows an ace. The dealer might also have a blackjack, in which case the game would end in a tie, and you wouldn’t win anything. With an “Even Money” bet, you opt for a guaranteed payout of one times your bet instead of waiting for an all-or-nothing outcome, just to be safe.

You can also choose the “Surrender” option in some blackjack games when you think your hand won’t beat the dealer’s. In this case, you get back half of your bet. Some versions of blackjack offer even more special bets, such as “Perfect Pairs”, where you bet on matching your first card with the dealer’s in terms of colour, card value, or both.
