The Most Popular Casino Movies of All Time

Maybe every James Bond film isn’t set in a luxury casino online. But the moment when Sean Connory takes his seat at the roulette table in Diamonds are Forever is iconic. The casino has also been an inspiration for many a filmmaker. These five films about casinos and gambling are definitely worth watching!

Casino

Crime classics with Robert DeNiro always do well, and so 1995’s Casino seemed like a great kick-off for us. The film is based on the non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, about how American casinos were run by the mafia in the 1970s. DeNiro plays a gambling expert aptly nicknamed Ace, who is asked to run a casino. Over time, however, he becomes increasingly entangled in the clutches of greed and crime. That he falls in love with a femme fatale who had a relationship with a mafia member also does not bode well. Don’t be put off by the long running time!

21

In this crime drama, Jim Sturgess plays student Ben who travels to Las Vegas every weekend with a group of fellow students to earn an extra penny in the casinos, especially with blackjack. This plan soon exceeds their wildest expectations. The group perfects the art of counting cards in the card deck, making them unbeatable in casinos. In the process, they get help from Kevin Spacey, a maths professor and statistics genius. Can Ben keep his cool in boisterous and extravagant Vegas? 21 received mixed reviews, but hit well with audiences.

The Gambler

Of course, this one couldn’t be missing from our list. This gripping crime drama also shows the dark sides of gambling, with Mark Wahlberg playing the pan of the roof as a literature professor with a gambling addiction. In his quest for riches in Las Vegas, he gets involved with the mafia. The combination of action, drama and thriller elements make for a viewing experience that never bores for a moment, and Mark Wahlberg was widely praised for his acting. Some critics felt that The Gambler tried to combine too many genres, but the film nevertheless became a hit in the genre.

Molly’s Game

As the second biographical film on our list, this film tells the true story of entrepeneur Molly Bloom. Jessica Chastain plays the role of this professional ski star who fails to qualify for the Olympics, and so becomes a waitress in Las Vegas. Soon she meets a real estate developer who convinces her to organise underground poker tournaments. This she did very successfully for a decade, until the FBI caught her. You don’t have to look here for the action, but if you’re in the mood for a fascinating, tense courtroom drama with razor-sharp dialogue, Molly’s Game is an ideal choice. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics and audiences alike are overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

Rounders

In an innocent game of poker, the protagonist in Rounders, played by Matt Damon, loses all his money. He promises his girlfriend that he will never play poker again. Yet he is dragged back into it when his best friend, played by Edward Norton, gets out of prison. To help his friend pay off loans from a Russian mafia boss, he plunges back into the world of professional poker. Will he manage to pay off the debts while saving his relationship with his girlfriend? Rounders was a modest Box Office success in 1998 and is often compared to another Matt Damon vehicle: Good Will Hunting.
