How Much Casino Dealers Make & How to Become One

Would you like to work in a casino and can you already see yourself standing at the roulette wheel or dealing cards at blackjack? The profession of croupier has an undeniable allure. A casino is a unique working environment where you are constantly challenged and interact with many people. Read here for a brief overview of what you do as a croupier, how you can get started and what you can earn.

What are your tasks as a croupier?

A croupier is the person who supervises the games at a gaming table in a casino. This mainly involves roulette and blackjack, and sometimes poker, baccarat or punto banco. You don’t have to be multi-skilled for all games, but can also choose to stick to roulette or blackjack.

It is your job to ensure that the games are played fairly and according to the rules, while putting the players at ease. In card games such as blackjack and poker, you deal the cards, and in roulette, you throw the ball onto the wheel. You are also responsible for the payouts, handing out the chips and paying the winnings to the players correctly. Being good at mental arithmetic is therefore a must.

How to become a croupier

You do not need any specific prior training to become a croupier. If you are motivated and have the necessary skills, such as accuracy, stress resistance and customer focus, you can always apply for a vacancy. You will usually follow an internal, paid training course lasting several months at a casino. There you will learn everything about the strict procedures involved in each game, the rules of the game, how to deal with customers and how to behave professionally at the table.

The duration of the training varies from casino to casino. At Grand Casino Brussels VIAGE, for example, you will follow an intensive eight-week course that focuses mainly on roulette, blackjack and poker. If you are extra motivated, you can also try your hand at Punto Banco and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. You will learn how to handle the playing cards and chips and which calculation techniques are best to use. Attention is also paid to the correct attitude to adopt at the gaming table. This course is followed by a four-week internship.

This is what you can earn as a dealer
